Music

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, and life to everything…Without music, life would be an error. (Plato)

It is well recognised that music can help to develop the skills, attitudes and attributes that can support learning in other National Curriculum subjects. This includes listening skills, the ability to concentrate, creativity, intuitions, aesthetic sensitivity, perseverance, the ability to work in a group, self confidence and sensitivity towards others; qualities that also embody and reinforce our Illogan values.

We aim for our children to:

  • Enjoy and appreciate a wide variety of musical styles.
  • Explore how sounds are made, and how music is produced by a variety of instruments.
  • Develop imagination and creativity.
  • Build a sense of pulse and rhythm.
  • Understand a range of musical vocabulary and terminology.
  • Develop the interrelated skills of composition, improvisation, performance and    appreciation.
  • Enjoy a wide range of songs and sing in tune.
  • Develop positive attitudes and to experience success and satisfaction in music.

Our vision for music is that we provide every child with high quality music experiences which engage and inspire them. All children are given the opportunity to create, play, perform and enjoy music and to appreciate a variety of music styles. Children will leave Illogan School with a range of musical skills and knowledge, as well as an understanding and love of music which they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

How do we teach Music at Illogan?

At Illogan, we use the Charanga Musical School Scheme to provide teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school. It is ideal for specialist and non-specialist teachers and provides lesson plans, assessment, clear progression, and engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson. The Scheme supports all the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Each Unit of Work comprises of strands of musical learning which correspond with the National Curriculum for music:

  1. Listening and Appraising
  2. Music Activities:
  • Warm-up Games
  • Optional Flexible Games
  • Singing
  • Playing instruments
  • Improvisation
  • Composition
  1. Performing

The Charanga Musical School Units of Work enable our children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills.

Throughout the year, we also offer music clubs such as glockenspiel, choir as well as the opportunity to take part in Rocksteady.
